Debby Applegate, Pulitzer Prize winning author

SPC is proud to kick-off its 2007-2008 programming year with this notable author. Ms. Applegate's prize was awarded in the category of biography for her book, The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher. Beecher was a mid-19th century minister who is credited as being one of the founders of modern American Christianity. A reformer, he also crusaded against slavery and promoted women's suffrage and Darwinism. He was a witty and charismatic speaker who drew huge crowds and, in 1857, was the first speaker at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA.

Linda L. Carli
Social Psychologist and Author
The Labyrinth of Leadership: Women Confront the Double Bind

Linda L. Carli, professor of Psychology at Wellesley College and coauthor, with Alice Eagly, of Through the Labyrinth: The Truth About How Women Become Leaders, will shed some much needed light on why, even in the 21st century, women still struggle to reach elite positions of power. On the U.S. Fortune 500, for example, only 3% of the CEOs are women. Dr. Carli will discuss why the glass ceiling is no longer a useful metaphor, and why the labyrinth is a more accurate image. She will outline the obstacles women leaders face, suggest ways to negotiate them, and illustrate practical principles that can help women — and men — be better leaders.
